If you're unfamiliar with the military time system, it can be confusing to figure out what the equivalent of 8PM is. Military time expresses time of day in the form of 24-hour clocks rather than the 12-hour clock we more commonly use. 8 PM in military time would be 2000 hours, or 20:00.
Military time is an alternate way to express time and helps to prevent confusion since you always know exactly which hour it is when looking at a given timeframe. By expressing the hour in a 4 digit number (ie. 1300) versus a 12 hour, AM/PM format (1 PM) there is no confusion or risk of misinterpretation. Even if some people prefer using the traditional 12 hour clock, universally using military time also prevents any unintended confusion between various time zones.
To explain further, 10:30AM in standard civilian time would be written as 1030 hours in military time. Digital and analog clocks will typically display times using standard 12-hour clock formats but may also offer additional features that allow you to switch between military and civil formats if desired or required. For example, if you company requires militarized timesheets they may specify that hours worked should be reported in a military format.
